What Happened
During the first week of August 2021, the Van Hanh Buddhist Meditation Center, located at 158 Genesee St. In the city of Rochester, NY, was burglarized, vandalized, and desecrated. The meditation center serves as a sanctuary for many in the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian communities. It is also a location for visiting monks from all over the world. The Rochester Police Department has no suspects in custody and there is no ongoing investigation. Whether this was an Anti-Asian attack or a crime of opportunity, it is without a doubt an assault on the immigrant community, the Vietnamese and Asian communities, and all communities of faith. Unfortunately, this is the culmination of many years of personal, property, and civil rights violations towards this community with no justice or redress. The Rochester Community and its governing bodies cannot allow this to continue.
